"Redolence" explores "Scents of Comforting Places", our common statement of interest, through an abstract sensory animation that visualizes how olfactory data connects us to memory, comfort, and emotion. By focusing on scent as invisible data, our project illustrates how smells trigger feelings of belonging and safety, shaping our perception of place and well-being.
Through three distinct spaces, Nature (blue), Artificial (red), and Food (yellow), we experience different types of comforting environments. Nature brings peace and grounding, artificial spaces offer clarity and control, and food evokes warmth and familiarity. Each scene breathes with its own rhythm, using color and movement to blur the lines between what is natural, artificial, and familiar.
Aligned with "DATA—Beyond Numbers", "Redolence" emphasizes sensory data—like scent—that often goes unnoticed but has profound effects on how we feel and connect to the world. It invites viewers to reflect on the intangible qualities that make a place comforting and how design can embrace these invisible signals for well-being.
